Ho’omau Counseling

Nature-based therapy for anxiety, depression, and life transitions in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Who We Are

Ho‘omau Counseling is a therapist and counseling practice based in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. We provide therapy for anxiety, depression, addiction, and life transitions for adults and young adults. Sessions are available through telehealth across Hawai‘i and in person through nature-based therapy experiences including therapeutic hikes on the Big Island. We believe therapy is not only about understanding what’s wrong, but about building something better in its place.

Our approach is rooted in positive psychology, focusing on developing strengths, healthy habits, and perspectives that support resilience and meaning. Time in nature can play an important role in this process, helping people slow down, gain clarity, and reconnect with what matters most. The goal is not simply to reduce distress, but to replace unhelpful patterns with strengths, habits, and perspectives that support resilience, meaning, and a fuller life.

    Therapeutic Hikes

Therapeutic hikes are extended nature-based sessions that combine the depth of therapy with the benefits of time outdoors. These experiences take place on trails around the Kona side of the Big Island and allow space for conversation, reflection, and movement in a natural setting.

Unlike traditional office sessions, longer hikes allow for deeper exploration of life questions and transitions.

These extended sessions are especially well suited for working through major life transitions, grief, relationship changes, and questions of purpose and direction.

Because of their length and format, therapeutic hikes are offered as private-pay nature immersion sessions rather than insurance-based therapy visits.

    Telehealth Therapy Across Hawai'i

For those outside the Kona area or who prefer meeting from home, telehealth sessions are available across Hawai‘i.

Online therapy offers the same thoughtful and collaborative approach as in-person sessions, creating space to reflect, gain clarity, and work toward meaningful change.

Many clients appreciate the flexibility of meeting online while continuing the deeper work of building healthier patterns, resilience, and direction in their lives.
